Mayor unveils bustThe Mayor of Kolkata, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, unveiled a bust of Rammohan Roy on 24th January 2008 at the Brahmo Sammilan Samaj. The Mayor paid tribute to a great social reformer, the founder of a significant religious movement and a builder of the modern age in India.

The bust was acquired by the Brahmo Sammilan Samaj from Kalika Theatre in Sadananda Road. This historic theatre hall was constructed in the forties and housed amongst other statues of big personalities from the Bengal Renaissance period this bust of Raja Rammohun Roy. Recently when the theatre complex was demolished, the bust was handed over to the Brahmo Sammilan Samaj. The Samaj authorities had restored the bust to its present state.

A seminar which followed, reminded the audience of Rammohun Roy's great contributions in the emancipation of women in India. Mr Prasad Ranjan Roy, the Home Secretary of government of West Bengal (a Brahmo himself), the Mayor of Kolkata, Mr Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, and Mr Pankaj Kumar Saha, a former Director of Kolkata Doordarshan, highlighted Rammohun Roy's noteworthy contributions in humanitarian, social as well as political, legal and economic reforms of India and his tireless supports for women's rights to property, education , monogamous marriage, and widow re-marriage. The Mayor, Mr Bhattacharya, said the works Raja Rammohun Roy had started to give women the equal rights in the society were ongoing and that the government and the society should not lose sight of his vision and should remain committed to the causes he had fought for over 175 years ago.

Earlier the function was commenced by a paryer by Dr. Kalyansree Dasgupta and songs by Abhijit Das.
