| 121st Brahmo Conference at Shimla from 09 to 11 Sep 2011 |
 .It is the proud privilege of the Himalaya Brahmo Samaj, Shimla privilege to host the 121st International Brahmo Conference at Shimla from 9th September to 11th September, 2011. The Organizing Committee cordially invites you and solicits your participation along with your family, sympathizers and members of the Samaj.
Shimla, is a very picturesque hill station surrounded by tranquil forests on the slopes of the breathtaking Himalayas. It has been very popular with all tourists as the Queen of all Hill Stations in India. During the British Regime it was the summer capital of India. Now in Post- Independence India, it is the capital of Himachal Pradesh.
The conference theme is “Spreading and popularizing the philosophy of the Brahmo Samaj in the Himalayan Region.”
The aims of the conference:
- To instill among all Brahmo brothers and sisters all over the world, a feeling of unity and camaraderie.
This would foster a spirit of mutual help and co-operation in Brahmos as they take up national causes
keeping intact their good character and high moral values.
- To popularize the liberal, humane, forward looking and secular ideology of Brahmo Samaj through a revival of commitment and devotion to the traditional Brahmo religious beliefs and moral objectives. The Vedic – Upanishad ideas of Satyam, Shivam and Advaitam ( i.e. Truth, Goodness & Absolute Oneness of the Supreme God embody the quintessence of the Brahmo Religious Doctrine).
- To acquaint the children and youth with the great legacies bequeathed to the nation by venerable Brahmo men and women in various parts of the country. In the process we would like to inspire them to get involved in humanitarian work among the poor, sick, aged and handicapped sections of the society.
- To help to unify the fragmented Indian society by promoting the Universal Brotherhood of Man duly transcending the narrow barriers created by caste, creed, community race and religion. This is to be done by spreading the message of love, peace and tolerance among people.
- To make the Brahmo Movement an economically self sustaining movement as it endeavours to preserve the cultural heritage of the community left behind by our venerable leaders.
Delegate fee:
- ADULTS: Rs 600/ per person **
- CHILDREN (5 years to 12 years): Rs 300/ per person **
- CHILDREN (below 5 years): Free
** (Please note that Rs 100/ from the delegate fee of each participant will be transferred to the common pool of the Brahmo Conference.)
Registration:
As Shimla is an extremely popular tourist attraction, more so in the post – Monsoon period, we request you to kindly confirm your participation before 10th July, 2011. Please respond to us by filling in details of your participation as per the format with respect to the following:
- The date and mode of your arrival at Shimla;
- The size of your contingent.
- The exact nature of requirement of your accommodation.
Delegates may please note that as Shimla is in a hilly region with governmental restrictions on building space and designs, all residential accommodation here is built on different levels without lifts. Therefore, physical climbing of steps is unavoidable in any lodge. In case you have very old or physically handicapped people in your group, please indicate it clearly in your delegate form. This preliminary information would help us to plan to accommodate them on priority on lower floors which minimize the climbing of steps.
Accommodation
To minimize the inconvenience of frequent movements of delegates from the Conference Venue at Kalibari to their place of stay we have reserved in advance the accommodation closest to Kalibari. As on date, with the goodwill of the local authorities we have managed to get the following accommodation at Kalibari itself:
- 4 bedded rooms- 15 no’s
(Each room has an attached toilet . Bedroll and blankets are provided in all rooms. Electric geysers are provided in all toilets. Though all rooms do not have provision for western toilets we are making provisions for chairs/ stools with holes to be kept on the Indian toilets so that they serve as makeshift western commodes.)
- Dormitories ( with sleeping capacity of 7 persons each)- 5 no’s
(The dormitories will have common baths and toilets. Bedroll and blankets are provided in all dormitories. Electric geysers are provided in all toilets. Though all rooms do not have provision for western toilets we are making provisions for chairs/ stools with holes to be kept on the Indian toilets so that they serve as makeshift western commodes.)
The charges per head for accommodation at Kalibari would be Rs 100/ per head per day for both individual rooms and dormitories. Please note that as Kalibari accommodation is located within the Conference venue, it will not only be the most convenient (especially for senior citizens) but also the cheapest in a costly tourist place like Shimla.
We therefore earnestly request you to book your accommodation in advance duly confirming with a letter and sending your payment to us as a token of your confirmation. The earlier your confirmation, the easier it would be for blocking your room/ bed in dormitory. (For details of the quantum and mode of payment , please see our instructions below.)
Accommodation - (other than Kalibari
Those desirous of separate hotel accommodation should be ready to pay a minimum of Rs 800/ per double bedded room per day. We are trying our best to negotiate with the local hoteliers to reduce the rate. It may be appreciated that there is a wide variation between on-season and off-season rates. Therefore, we cannot guarantee you of any further reduction in view of the post – Monsoon tourist arrivals in Shimla. Please indicate your preference for accommodation outside Kalibari in the delegate information form.
Suggested duration of stay
Since the conference starts in the early hours of 9th September, 2011 and since the first train connecting passengers coming from beyond Kalka arrives into Shimla only at 10.15 hours we would sincerely advise all delegates to arrive at Shimla a day before the conference i.e. on 8th September, 2011. This also would help you to get adjusted to the weather and freshen up sufficiently after a long journey. Since we are conducting a sightseeing trip on 12th September (the day after the Conference), we suggest to all delegates to plan for their departure from Shimla on the morning of 13th September. Therefore, ideally, they would be required to book their accommodation for a minimum period of 5 days (8th to 12th September, all days inclusive).
